International accessibility standards for people with disabilities was established by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 (WCAG 2.0) explains how to make Web content accessible to people with disabilities.
The success ratings are divided into 3 levels:
• A: The most basic web accessibility features
• AA: Deals with the most common barriers
• AAA: The highest and most complex level of web accessibility
Assistive technologies—such as screen readers, braille displays, and screen magnifiers—enable customers with special needs to navigate websites, understand content, and complete transactions like purchasing policies.
When your digital platforms are not accessible, you risk excluding an entire group of potential customers. This not only limits your reach but can also lead to legal and reputational consequences. Prioritizing inclusive design demonstrates your commitment to equity, enhances user experience for everyone, and opens your business to a broader audience.
According the the 2013 NZ Disability Survey:
1.1 million kiwis (24%) have a disability
150, 000 kiwis had low vision
30,000 kiwis were fully blind
200,000 kiwis had a form of colour blindness
680,000 kiwis had a physical disability
